William J. Young - Associate Director of Bands

Mr. William J. Young stands as a prominent figure in music education, currently serving as the Associate Director of Bands for the Southern University Department of Bands. His journey in this field is marked by a series of notable achievements and a strong commitment to musical excellence.

Prior to his current role, Mr. Young was instrumental in shaping young musicians as the Associate Director of Bands at Langston University. This position was preceded by his impactful leadership as the Director of Fine Arts at Duncanville ISD and Cedar Hill ISD. His career also includes a significant tenure as Department Chair and Director of Bands at Skyline Magnet Center, where he skillfully managed a substantial band program, including the Wind Ensemble and the Skyline Raider Marching Band, while also overseeing the Concert Band and two Jazz Bands. Furthermore, Mr. Young served as the Assistant Band Director at David W. Carter High School in Dallas, TX, and the Director of Bands at Northwest High School in Opelousas, LA.

Mr. Young is a proud alumnus of Southern University and A&M College. During his undergraduate years, he was an active member of the renowned "Human Jukebox” Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Pep Band, and Brass Ensemble. He continued his educational pursuit, earning a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Concordia University in Austin, Texas.

Under his guidance, bands have consistently attained Superior Ratings in prestigious competitions, including the Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) and the University Interscholastic League (UIL), in both Marching Band and Concert & Sight-Reading Contests. His leadership not only fostered these accomplishments but also led to over forty students annually qualifying for the Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest. Moreover, his dedication to the Fine Arts has resulted in several national awards for the programs he has overseen.

Apart from his educational and administrative roles, Mr. Young is also recognized as an arranger, clinician, band consultant, and adjudicator, contributing significantly to various universities and high school band programs across the United States. His professional affiliations are extensive, including the National Association for Music Education, American Bandmasters Association, Texas Administration Association Conference, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Black Music Educators, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

In his role at Southern University, Mr. Young brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and a deep passion for music education. His position as Associate Director of Bands is a reflection of his lifelong dedication to the arts and education, signaling a promising and dynamic future for the university’s band program.
